The Mesa Verde was home to the early Pueblo farmers who dwelt on the Mesa tops and cultivated their crops of corn, squash and beans, as well as hunting wild game. They moved off the tops and created these cliff dwelling around the 1190s until the late 1270s when they left. It is not known why exactly, but drought and crop failures have been suggested. These outstanding multilevel dwellings can still be seen up close, but you have to go with a Ranger and you have to be fit enough, which rules me out. I did some of the shorter decents, and took my time getting back up.
When the cliff dwellers left, they joined other Pueblo people in Arizona and New Mexico, where I an heading tomorrow. Santa Fe here I come 🤠
